What Does Bible Say About Love?

People spend years searching for the meaning of true love, but very few turn to the Bible to learn what it has to say about it. The Bible is full of passages about love, and it’s one of the central themes of scripture. Love is one of the most important virtues of living a Christian life, so we should really be turning to God to understand what it means.

“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8

“Do everything in love." 1 Corinthians 16:14

“Love is long-suffering The Bible often mentions suffering. Though this can refer to outward, physical suffering, in the New Covenant it mostly applies to the suffering that occurs when you deny your own sinful lusts and desires and put them ... and kind. It does not envy; does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth: bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

“Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:13

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son.” 1 John 4:10

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44-45

“If someone says, ‘I love God’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother who he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him. That he who loves God must love his brother.” 1 John 4:20-21

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." Romans 13:8

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:2

“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned." Song of Solomon 8:7

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life." Psalm 143:8

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man." Proverbs 3:3-4

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." 1 John 4:16

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Ephesians 4:2

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." John 15:12

“You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace." Song of Solomon 4:9
